The Living Dead, Ephesians 2:4-5

Buddy horrified to wear bat collar.

Before I rescued Buddy from an abusive situation, he was surviving but not thriving. He lived but was slowly dying emotionally. Though he has lived the past ten years in a loving home, he still bears the scars of those awful years. He has odd habits and fears. We had to turn around on our walkie this morning because we encountered a tree full of loud, tweeting birds near the trail. For some reason he terrified of loud chirps! It’s embarrassing.

What nonbelievers don’t understand is that everyone is born spiritually dead. Adam and Eve were born as whole human beings, indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God. “It is the Spirit Who gives life;”—Jesus, John 6:63

When our first ancestors decided to reject God’s authority in order to decide right and wrong for themselves, God’s Spirit left the human race, no longer indwelling us at birth.

That is why we are all walking dead—spiritual zombies.

When a person repents of their sin and accepts Jesus as their Lord, what they are telling God is the reversal of what Adam and Eve declared: “Lord, I accept your authority over my actions; I accept You as my Lord with the right to define what right and wrong is.”

Christians believe that God defines right and wrong for us through the Bible, holy scripture that He inspired. Which is why we study it.

If you acknowledge that Jesus died for your sins, and as God in the Flesh was able to pay the penalty for your wrongdoing, and also acknowledge that He rose from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9-10).

Then you receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, Who will remain with you forever, granting you eternal life.

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses and sins, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),”—Apostle Paul, Ephesians 2:4-5

So everyone has a choice: Truly live as a whole person in Christ—or continue as one of the walking dead.

Praying you make—or have made—the choice to truly live this Halloween.

Love from Dawn and Buddy
